The Super Blue Moon will be visible in UAE skies on August 31, 2023. ARCHIVE

The rare Super Blue Moon rises on Thursday night (August 31) and you can watch it from the UAE, experts said. The phenomenon happens every three years, and the next one will be on May 31, 2026, according to NASA. Contrary to the name, a Super Blue Moon is not named because the moon will turn blue in colour. The phenomenon happens when a second full moon appears within a calendar month. The first full moon was spotted in the UAE on August 1. This is where the idiomatic expression “once in a blue moon” was coined from. On Thursday night, the moon will be closer to the UAE than ever before. According to the Dubai Astronomy Group, the moon will be visible in the UAE starting at 7pm. The Al Thuraya Astronomy Center in Mushrif Park is offering a paid two-hour public viewing session with talks, a photo session and telescope observations. Tickets cost Dh60.ICA/Expat Media
