UAE: WPS salary transfer optional for housemaids, 13 other domestic worker professions

Registering housemaids and 13 other professions in the Wages Protection System (WPS) is optional, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced. According to MoHRE, only five professions under the domestic worker category are required to have their salary payments via the WPS starting April 1: private agricultural engineer, personal public relations officer (PRO), personal healthcare provider, private tutor, and private trainer. The ministry said that for 14 domestic worker professions, employers have the option whether or not their salary will be registered in the WPS. These professions are housemaid, sailor, security guard, household shepherd, household horse groomer, household falcon trainer, tamer, physical labour worker, housekeeper, cook, nanny/babysitter, farmer, gardener and personal driver. MoHRE called on employers to register domestic workers in WPS, which allows a transparent payment of wages, provides a safe work environment and reduces labour disputes. Employees who have filed labour disputes related to wages, have been reported absent as per an absconding report, are on unpaid leave and are within their first 30 days from the due date of the wage, are excluded from the WPS.
