UAE's first astronaut returns home from Russia

DUBAI – The UAE’s first astronaut to reach space has returned home from Russia, receiving a hero’s welcome from the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. Hazzaa Al Mansouri, who spent eight days in the International Space Station before landing back safely on Earth, arrived in Abu Dhabi on Saturday (October 12). He was greeted by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. Al Mansouri, 35, was accompanied by backup astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, 38. They were dressed in blue space suits with the UAE flag draped over their shoulders. The pair walked on a red carpet flanked with UAE flags. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed greeted the duo while accompanied by his grandchildren. Jets flew overhead to paint the sky with the UAE colours as the astronauts walked on the tarmac and entered the airport. A sign at the airport read: “Welcome home, pride of the nation." Al Mansoori had referred to his mission as an "international collaboration". In space, he carried out a series of scientific experiments and prepared a traditional Emirati dinner for other astronauts.
