The UAE’s Midday Break initiative ended on Sunday (September 15) with an with an impressive 99.9 percent compliance rate, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). The Midday Break, which began on June 15, prohibited work under direct sunlight between 12:30pm and 3pm; aimed to safeguard workers from high temperatures and prevent heat-related illnesses. To ensure compliance, MoHRE conducted approximately 134,000 inspection visits during the Midday Break period, recording only 51 violations. The initiative included the provision of 6,000 rest stations for delivery service workers, offering them shelter during the hottest part of the day. Mohsin Al Nassi, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection Affairs at MoHRE, commended the private sector for its adherence to the regulations. "Companies across the UAE labour market have demonstrated remarkable compliance, reflecting the success of the Ministry's partnership-driven approach," he said. He added that many companies went beyond the basic requirements by introducing their own measures to mitigate heat stress, such as shaded areas and cooling equipment. The Midday Break, implemented for over 20 years, has become a cornerstone of UAE labour market legislation. Al Nassi noted that community initiatives, such as distributing food and cold drinks to workers during the break hours, also contributed to the program's success. MoHRE’s partners and members of the community actively participated in raising awareness about the policy and workers' rights. Throughout the summer months, the initiative required companies to provide shaded areas, hydration supplements, and first aid equipment to protect workers' well-being. The Ministry encouraged community members to report violations via its online platforms, smart application, and call centre.
