UK roads to welcome self-driving cars

The UK unveiled plans to introduce self-driving cars on British roadways. Some self-driving vehicles could be approved for use as early as next year, and fully autonomous cars may be on UK roads by 2025. The budding industry may grow to be worth £42 billion and employ 38,000 people under the £100 million UK government plan. The general adoption of the cars by 2025 will be made possible by new legislation, which includes £34 million to be spent on safety improvements. An additional £20 million will be used to help launch commercial self-driving services such as grocery deliveries and passenger shuttle pods. “We want the UK to be at the forefront of developing and using this fantastic technology, and that is why we are investing millions in vital research into safety and setting the legislation to ensure we gain the full benefits that this technology promises,” said Transport Secretary Grant Shapps. According to the government, self-driving cars for highway usage may be on sale next year, but these would still require a valid driving license so drivers could use the vehicle on other roads. Other autonomous cars, like those used for delivery or public transportation, which the government hopes to see on the road by 2025, may be operated without a driver's license because they would be fully self-contained. “It is still quite a big leap from assisted driving, where the driver is still in control, to self-driving, where the car takes control,” said Automobile Association president Edmund King.
