Buckingham Palace announces that tthe 95-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II will step down

  LONDON – Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, will be retiring from public life and will not accept any more invitations for public engagements starting September, Buckingham Palace announced on Wednesday. The Queen, on the other hand, will continue with her official duties with the help of other members of the British royal family although the 91-year-old monarch had scaled back her public appearances in recent years. The 95-year-old prince, who goes by the royal title The Duke of Edinburg and will turn 96 next month, steps down after being with the Queen through most of her reign for the past 65 years. The royal couple will mark their 70th weddding anniversary this November. The Queen is the longest-serving living monarch in the world. In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year. In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of The Queen." The statement further said: "Prince Philip will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August, both individually and accompanying The Queen. Thereafter, The Duke will not be accepting new invitations for visits and engagements, although he may still choose to attend certain public events from time to time." In reaction to the upcoming retirement of Prince Philip, British Prime Minister Theresa May wished him well and offered the UK's "deepest gratitude".
