Security Council resolution targets exports, joint ventures with foreign firms

  NEW YORK – The UN Security Council unanimously approved on Saturday new sanctions on North Korea for its missile tests conducted last month. US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said Resolution 2371, which was passed unanimously by the 15 members of the council, including China, targets Pyongyang's primary exports like minerals and seafood and sources of revenue like banks and joint ventures with foreign firms. China is North Korea's ally and had been urged by the US to tell Pyongyang to toe the line. "(It is) the strongest sanctions ever imposed in response to a ballistic missile test," a statement from Haley's office said. The statement also said the sanctions will reduce North Korea's annual export revenue of US$3 billion by more than a third. North Korea tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and claimed that it now had the capability to hit the US mainland, which military experts in Washington had doubted. The UN sanctions followed those imposed by the Trump administration last week which reiterates existing sanctions on Pyongyang such as asset blockage and the revocation of permits for certain financial transactions.
