UN recognizes Abu Dhabi’s efforts to restore, protect marine life

Abu Dhabi's efforts to protect coastlines and marine life and restore coral, mangroves, and seagrass have received UN recognition. Abu Dhabi has been named one of the ten pioneering efforts to revive the natural world. The coastline of Abu Dhabi is home to a variety of marine life, including the dugong, the only exclusively herbivorous marine mammal in the world, seven species of marine reptiles, three species of dolphins, and one species of finless porpoise. To mitigate the effects of urban development, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with its allies, conservationists, and locals, is reviving the coastline and establishing a haven for marine life by establishing nurseries for seagrass, transplanting healthy coral, and planting mangrove trees. Abdulla Al Remeithi, Director - Integrated Environmental Policy and Planning, Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, stated during The Journey to Net Zero forum in November that the UAE capital will plant one million mangrove trees in its efforts to achieve net zero targets and the emirate also counts on the role of the private sector to meet the target. Tragically, human activity drives many marine animals, including the dugong, to extinction. It's still possible to change course and give nature another chance, as evidenced by Abu Dhabi's efforts to restore coastal habitats. The intiative shows that it is possible to coexist peacefully with nature, as these World Restoration Flagships show, according to Inger Andersen, executive director of the UN Environment Programme.
