Assad regime has built a crematorium to burn bodies of detainees killed in military jail, says State Dept
WASHINGTON – The US has claimed that the Syrian government has built a large crematorium near a military prison where it kills as many as 50 enemies of the state everyday.
The US State Department based its claim on the existence of the crematorium on photographs and asked Moscow to rein in the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
CNN quoted Stuart Jones, acting assistant secretary for the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department, as saying: "Although the regime's many atrocities are well-documented, we believe the building of a crematorium is an effort to cover up the extent of mass atrocities taking place in Saydnaya prison. We are appalled by the atrocities taking place in Syria with the seemingly unconditional support of Russia."
Russia supports the Assad regime's fight against the country's rebels.
Jones said the Assad regime could be killing as many as 50 detainees in the prison every day and then dispose of the bodies in the crematorium.
Amnesty International had alleged in a report entitled Human Slaughterhouse that housands of people have been hanged at the Saydnaya prison. According to the organization, prisoners are taken out in the middle of the night from their cells to the grounds of the prison where they are hanged.
Jones did not say if the US will resort to military action following the discovery of the crematorium.
"We're not going to signal what we're going to do and what we're not going to do," Jones said, adding that Washington will "bring evidence forward to the international community."
