Repeal measure to go to Senate where it is expected to meet rough sailing
WASHINGTON – By a vote of 217 to 20, the US House voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act popularly known as Obamacare.
The repeal of Obamacare, a landmark legislation of the administration of Barack Obama, was a campaign promise made by Trump when he ran for the US presidency last year. He also promised then that he will replace Obamacare with his administration's version that will "benefit" a majority of Americans.
After the House voted to repeal Obamacare, Trump celebrated it with House Republicans at the White House and said: "This is a great plan. I actually think it will get even better. This is a repeal and replace of Obamacare. Make no mistake about it."
The repeal measure now goes to the Senate where it is expected to face rough sailing because of a sharp divide between Republicans and conservatives but Trump is confident that it will be adopted by the Senate.
At the House, Democratic senators taunted their Republican colleagues by chanting "nah nah nah nah hey hey hey goodbye" as they believe that many lawmakers belonging to the Grand Old Party (GOP) or Republican Party will lose their seats in the mid-term elections in November next year for voting for the repeal of Obamacare.
When the repeal bill was first taken up by the House last March, it did not get enough support prompting House Speaker Paul Ryan to withdraw the proposed measure, dealing a political blow to Trump.
It was again introduced in the floor last month, hoping that it would be passed as Trump marked his 100th day in office but again, it failed.
The Republicans' version of Obamacare, as reported by CNN, would remove taxes imposed by the Affordable Care Act on the wealthy, insurers and others and get rid of the individual mandate imposed by Obamacare.
In lieu of the Obamacare subsidies that are tied to income and premiums, the Republicans' health care plan will provide Americans with refundable tax credits based mainly on age to purchase health insurance.
The legislation would also allow insurers to charge higher premiums to those in their 50s and early 60s, compared to younger consumers, according to a CNN report.
