Senators lambast general over unsatisfactory answers during hearing on scandal

  WASHINGTON – US Marines Corps commander Robert Neller vowed to prosecute those who posted photos on social media of female soldiers either in various stages of undress or were naked. "We all have to commit to getting rid of this perversion of our culture. We will take action to remove this stain on our Marine Corps," General Neller said. Neller made the vow during a Senate armed services committee hearing on the scandal that has rocked the prestigious military unit. This, as lawmakers strongly criticized Neller over the scandal. Neller condemned the posting of the photos in a private Facebook group called Marines United that has 30,000 members and on other photo-sharing platforms without the consent of the subjects. While the general promised to prosecute the persons involved, he admitted that Marine Corps investigators have difficulty identifying individual users, stopping the spread of spinoff websites linking to the scandalous images and determing the legal recourse to punish the offenders. He urged Marin Corps members who have information about the lew photos to help them identify the perpetrators. Senators inquired about details of the investigation by the Marine Corps but were unsatisfied with Neller's replies. Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed expressed dissatisfaction with Neller's replies. Gillibrand said, "Your answers today are unsatisfactory...they do not go far enough." She stressed that the Marine Corps had been aware of the cyberharrassment of other Marines since 2013.
