USS John McCain collides with oil tanker at the Strait of Malacca; 10 sailors missing

  SINGAPORE – A US Navy official said the USS John S. McCain lost "steering control" prior to colliding with a Liberian oil tanker at the Malacca Strait near Singapore on Monday, according to a CNN report. Ten American sailors are missing as a result of the accident while five others were hurt. A search for those missing is ongoing. CNN quoted a US naval official as saying that the Navy destroyer suffered "steering casualty" as the ship was entering the Strait of Malacca and crashed into the Alnic MC, a Liberian-registered commercial tanker. The same official also reportedly said it was not determined why the crew of the USS John S. McCain didn't use the backup steering systems to control the ship. The official's statement echoed that of another US Navy official who said that early indications showed that the US Navy destroyer lost steering control but regained it after the mishap. Monday's accident is the fourth accident involved American naval ships this year and comes just a few months after a US Navy vessel collided with a Philippine-registered merchant vessel off Yokosuka, Japan.
