Move follows report that al Qaeda is attempting to hide explosives in laptop batteries

  WASHINGTON - The US and Britain have banned electronic devices larger than a cellphone such as laptops and tablets from being brought on board flights from Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa because of terrorist concerns. The electronic goods will be included or placed in check-in luggage instead. This, after the two countries received intelligence reports that the Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) is looking for way to plant explosives in laptops and tablets, particularly in batteries or battery compartments. Canada and France also reportedly considering a ban also but Germany said it will not impose one. Nine airlines, namely, Royal Jordanian, EgyptAir, Turkish Airlines, Saudi Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways, are covered by the ban. A US Government official said the airlines have been notified about the ban and have 96 hours to comply with it. Senior administration sources have been quoted by CNN as saying that the US ban will affect 50 daily flights from 10 airports. The 10 airports are: Queen Alia International in Amman, Jordan; Cairo International in Egypt; Ataturk International in Istanbul, Turkey; King Abdulaziz International in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; King Khalid International in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Kuwait International; Mohammed V International in Casablanca, Morocco; Hamad International in Doha, Qatar; and the UAE airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. According to CNN, US officials said an intelligence report "indicates terrorist groups continue to target commercial aviation by smuggling explosive devices in various consumer items." Some airlines are reportedly seeking clarification with regard the ban. They have asked: "if there is an immediate threat to aviation security, why is DHS (Department of Homeland Security) giving airlines 96 hours to comply with the ban instead of implementing it immediately?" Meanwhile, Turkey lambasted the ban and demanded that it be rescinded or scaled back. "We particularly emphasize how this will not benefit the passenger and that reverse steps or a softening should be adopted.
