Woman driver's hubby killed in the misha; family files wrongful death lawsuit v. Williams

  PALM GARDENS BEACH, Florida - Police said tennis star Venus Williams was allegedly at fault for a car accident last June 9 that resulted in the demise of the other car's 78-year-old passenger last June 22 or two weeks after the mishap. The police report said Williams was driving her 2010 Toyota Sequoia SUV through an intersection near her house in Palm Beach Gardens when a 2016 Hyundai Accent vehicle driven by Linda Barson, hit Williams' car. A copy of the police report was obtained by Agence France Presse (AFP) and US network ABC. TMZ Sports, which first reported about the accident, said Barson's husband, Jerome, sustained head trauma in the crash and was taken to a hospital. Linda was injured in the crash. Jerome however died in the hospital two weeks later, TMZ Sports also said. Williams told traffic investigators that she entered the intersection on a green light but had to stop in the middle of the junction because of traffic ahead of her. She also said she did not see Barson's car when she drove through the intersection. Police investigation showed that Williams was at fault for violating the right of way of Barson's car. Police said she was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs or was not using her mobile phone at the time of the accident. The Barson family has filed a wrongful death suit against Williams as they alleged negligence on her part. In their lawsuit, the Barsons said the impact of the crash caused damage to both vehicles. The Barson couple's car was "crushed, the front windshield shattered, the airbags deployed, there was crush damage to the rear on the driver's side, and the back window was shattered." Williams' vehicle "was also severely damaged," the suit added. The lawsuit also said Jerome suffered "severed main arteries, massive internal bleeding, a fractured spine, and massive internal organ damage." He was at the ICU when he died on June 22, which, the lawsuit said, was Linda's 68th birthday. Linda, on the other hand, suffered a cracked sternum and shattered right arm as well as broke her right wrist, hand and several fingers, the lawsuit said further. Williams' lawyer Malcolm Cunningham said in a statement: "This is an unfortunate accident and Venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one."
