PBA board moves opening of next season to December

  MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas will have the best Filipino basketball players in its roster when it competes at the FIBA Asia Cup in Beirut, Lebanon next month and at the 2019 World Cup qualifiers in November. This, after the board of governors of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) agreed to lend players like June Mar Fajardo, Terrence Romeo, Japeth Aguilar and Calvin Abueva to the national team following a decision to move the opening of the next PBA season to this December. The four players are shoo-ins for Gilas, which will seek to regain Asian basketball supremacy at the FIBA Asia Cup. PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that it is the PBA board's "priority to be involved and to be able to help the Gilas program." Narvasa also said: "The PBA, its coaches in particular, were just informed of the schedule (of the Gilas events), which is important to all of them." The Inquirer reported that there were mixed reports that came out months leading to the FIBA Asia Cup that Gilas would also be fielding its team of Cadets and several amateurs in Lebanon since the event originally did not fall into the hectic qualifying process of the FIBA World Cup in China in 2019. However, the new schedule of the World Cup qualifiers showed that the Philippines will play games in Australia, Chinese Taipei and Japan, starting in November, before hosting the Aussies, the Taiwanese and the Japanese in games in Manila. This means that Gilas will be playing two games each in November and in February and June 2018. Meanwhile, the PBA board has scheduled the league's elimination round games in the February and June playdates so as not to jeopardize title chances of the original teams of Gilas players.
