Veteran actor Vic Sotto files a complaint against filmmaker Darryl Yap at a Philippine court.

Veteran actor and television host Vic Sotto has taken legal action against filmmaker Darryl Yap, filing a cyber libel complaint in response to the teaser trailer for Yap's upcoming film, The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma. Sotto's complaint, lodged at the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court on Thursday (January 9), seeks 19 counts of cyber libel, moral damages amounting to P20 million (Dh1.2 million), and exemplary damages of P15 million (Dh941,881). The controversial teaser, released online on January 1, references Sotto's name in connection with the film’s sensitive subject matter—the alleged rape and tragic death of '80s star Pepsi Paloma. Speaking to reporters after filing the case, Sotto shared his reasons for pursuing legal recourse. “A lot of people asked for my reaction when the issue came out. I stayed silent. Now this is my reaction,” Sotto said in Filipino. The actor emphasized his trust in the legal system and denounced the spread of misinformation, particularly on social media. “This is not personal. I just trust in the justice system. I am against irresponsible individuals, especially on social media,” he added in Filipino. Sotto also disclosed that he was not consulted about the film, a point of contention that has added to his frustrations. He clarified that he first learned of the film through his wife, actress Pauleen Luna. Despite speculation that the issue could be politically motivated due to his son Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto’s re-election campaign, Sotto dismissed the idea. “This is a non-political issue, for me,” he said. He noted that his family and friends have shown him unwavering support. The controversy has taken a toll on Sotto’s family, according to Luna. “As parents and as his wife, . But of course, ,” she said. Filmmaker Darryl Yap responded to the lawsuit with a Facebook post asserting his commitment to truth and justice. “Anyone is free to file a complaint. There is no monopoly in justice,” he wrote in Filipino. Yap added that the film, expected to release later this year, aims to revisit Paloma’s alleged rape and the subsequent events leading to her death in 1985. The film stars Rhed Bustamante as Paloma, with Mon Confiado, Gina Alajar, and Shamaine Buencamino playing pivotal roles.
