Video: UAE records heaviest rainfall in 6 years

DUBAI – Did you know that the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the UAE was in 2016? The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) posted on Wednesday (March 9) a video showing badly flooded roads that left many people stranded due to heavy rainfall and strong winds that hit parts of the UAE on March 9, 2016. Watch it here: On that day, the weather monitoring station at Al Bateen Airport recorded strong wind speeds of up to 130kmph, according to NCM. The country also recorded its highest rainfall on March 9, 2016, with up to 287.6mm of rain. Parts of the country also experienced a hailstorm. The heavy rain coupled with strong winds caused chaos across the UAE, sending billboards and other debris flying on the streets. Several buildings were reportedly evacuated. Many cars got stuck on flooded streets and roads. In Ras Al Khaimah alone, 21 vehicles stuck in flooded valleys had to be towed by police. The UAE records about 100mm of precipitation annually. Experts are also using cloud-seeding methods to boost rainfall by at least 25 percent. ICA/Expat Media
