Cebu lawyers meet Robredo to propose lawyers' alliance against extra-judicial killings

  CEBU CITY –  Human rights lawyer Democrito Barcenas said the increase of vigilante-style of killings in Cebu is very alarming, saying "any kind of killing without due process is extra judicial killing". Barcenas said that this is very alarming not only to a human rights lawyer like him but "to all of us who value the sanctity of human life". "Any kind of killing outside of the law, no observance of due process, is extrajudicial/summary killing. Vigilante killing is not justice, its plain murder," he said. Barcenas said he and other Cebu lawyers met with Vice President Leni Robredo at her office last Wednesday. He said they presented their proposal to Robredo on forming an alliance of lawyers against extra-judicial killings. "She was very much in favor," Barcenas said, adding that they are yet to meet with the members of FLAG-7 and discuss the formal creation of the alliance. Barcenas added that they submitted to her copies of the three resolutions of the Free Legal Assistance Group Central Visayas against summary killings, against death penalty, and against the burial of the late president Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
