According to Adam Collins, founder of Ignite SEO, the smallest “icks” often have the biggest impact on morale—and online, they’re pure gold for virality. “These posts go viral because they’re painfully relatable,” says Collins. “It’s not the once-a-year crisis that gets people worked up—it’s the repeated, everyday stuff that makes them dread coming in.” On Reddit, threads about workplace icks have thousands of comments. Hygiene horrors like unflushed toilets, reheating tuna in the communal microwave, or leaving week-old protein shakers in the sink top the list of “ick-inducing” crimes. But it’s not just hygiene. Public humiliation by managers, forced team-building exercises, and cringeworthy corporate jargon like “circle back” and “let’s unpack this” also send employees straight to Reddit to vent. “These threads show exactly what people will talk about the second they’re off the clock—or online,” says Collins.

Reddit’s most viral ‘Office Icks’

Toilet taboo “One place I worked… someone and not even flushed it.” The top-rated comment in this thread unleashed over 100 disgusted replies, with users debating whether this was laziness, spite, or just pure savagery.

Public put-downs by managers “Managers correcting their employees in front of other employees and customers… My current manager… had 10 people quit on her in the span of a year.” Commenters shared similar horror stories, with several saying public corrections were “instant morale killers.”

Forced fun “Forced fun. When the office insists on ‘team bonding’ with awkward icebreakers… you’d rather just get back to pretending to work.” Many replies called these activities “performative,” with some admitting they quietly skip them if possible.

Cringe of corporate lingo What corporate colloquialisms make you cringe? “‘Just following up…’ and ‘per my last email’ — they make my skin crawl.” The thread became a running list of jargon to ban, from “circle back” to “let’s unpack that.”

Kitchen crimes “Grossest thing you’ve seen in an office kitchen?”  Highlights included reheating tuna or fish in the communal microwave; leaving a week-old protein shaker to fester in the sink, and licking a spoon and putting it straight back in the drawer.

“Hygiene slip-ups, bad management habits, and cringey forced culture aren’t just irritations — they chip away at respect, trust, and productivity,” says Collins. “These threads show exactly what people will talk about the second they’re off the clock — or online.”
