Fourth suspect in Dh14.75m Wafi heist in court

  DUBAI - A Serbian suspect in the daring robbery at Wafi mall in 2007 told the court on Sunday (June 12) that he had nothing to do with the heist. The 34-year-old Serbian is alleged to be the fourth member of the Pink Panther gang that used two stolen vehicles to ram through the glass wall of the mall entrance and rob the Graf jewellery store at the mall's ground floor. They drove away with Dh14.75 million worth of jewellery. After an extensive manhunt, police were able to retrieve the stolen jewellery and arrest some suspects, some of whom have been tried in court. Other suspects remain at large. Another Serb national has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for involvement in the case. A second Serbian suspected of aiding the robbers was cleared of charges. The case against a third suspect has been dismissed for lack of evidence. On Sunday, prosecutors accused the fourth Serbian suspect of aiding the Pink Panther gang and of using a fake Yugoslavian passport to enter and exit the UAE. He pleaded not guilty to the charge that he was involved in the heist, but admitted to using a forged passport. “Yes, I used the Yugoslavian passport to enter the UAE… and I also used the same passport to travel out of Dubai,” he told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi. He requested for a court-appointed lawyer to defend him and a Serbian translator. A police official testified in court that DNA findings and fingerprints found at the scene of the crime matched the suspect's fingerprints.
