Wahat Al Karama memorial for UAE’s heroes opens to public

  ABU DHABI – The Wahat Al Karama (Oasis of Dignity) in Abu Dhabi opened to the public on Thursday (December 1), a day after it was inaugurated by UAE leaders. Members of the UAE royal family, government officials, dignitaries and citizens gathered in the capital on Wednesday in an event to honour the country’s heroes. Family members of fallen soldiers also received medals of recognition for their kin’s sacrifice to the country. The memorial site measures 46,000 sq.m. and is located between the Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the UAE Armed Forces headquarters. It is open to the public 24 hours a day for those who want to pay their respects to the country's heroes. Considered a cultural landmark, Wahat Al Karama symbolizes UAE's pride in the sacrifices made by the country's heroes. It consists of 31 metal panels, each leaning on the other, and symbolizes strength, support and solidarity. The panels are engraved with poems written by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nayan, founder of the UAE. The memorial's support spine bears the pledge of allegiance of the UAE Armed Forces. The memorial site also has a plaza – a 4,000 sq.m.-open area where the annual Commemoration Day ceremonies will be held and a 15-mm deep pool at the center of the plaza.
