Becoming an influencer, a relatively new career in today’s social media-driven world is now an increasingly popular path for Gen Z. Now, a university in Ireland is offering the world's first degree program for social media influencing. South East Technical University (SETU) in Carlow, Ireland will be offering Bachelor of Arts in Content Creation and Social Media, a four-year program designed to teach students the essential skills for building a career in digital content creation. Students will learn everything from video and audio editing to business strategies, personal branding, and audience engagement. The program addresses the growing demand for skilled influencers, as the global social media influencing market has doubled since 2019, now valued at up to €16 billion. Dr. Eleanor O’Leary, a media lecturer at SETU, highlighted that graduates will be well-equipped to pursue careers as self-employed influencers or content creators for companies. Course director Irene McCormick also emphasised the importance of personal branding and teaching students how to monetize their online presence, a skill set increasingly sought after by Gen Z. The program received accreditation and welcomed its first intake of 15 students last September. It aims to help students turn their passion for social media into a successful career, giving them the skills they need to thrive in the fast-changing digital world.
