Actor-filmmaker declines to comment on flub

  HOLLYWOOD - Actor-filmmaker Warren Beatty wants the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), organizer of the annual Oscars, to "publicly clarify as soon as possible" what happened in the Best Picture presentation. "I feel it would be more appropriate for the president of the Academy, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, to publicly clarify what happened as soon as possible," said Beatty in a press statement released to the Associated Press. Beatty declined to comment on the mix-up. Beatty and actress Faye Dunaway were the presenters of the Best Picture award and Dunaway mistakenly announced the musical-love story "La La Land" as winner instead of the coming-of-age drama "Moonight". Beatty and Dunaway were given the wrong envelope by an auditor of Pricewaterhousecoopers, the auditing firm that tabulates the Oscar votes. Actress Shirley MacLaine, older sister of Beatty, came to her younger brother's defense as she told AP "the academy has to get their act together." ''I thought it was just really, really terrible. I couldn't imagine what he must have been feeling. I'm still basically processing it because it was in front of so many people." AMPAS representatives did not give any comment on Beatty's statement. It has let Pricewaterhousecoopers do the explaining since last Sunday's ceremonies held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The auditing firm has apologized for the blunder.
