Be wary of fake free WiFi in Dubai, TRA warns

  DUBAI – Hackers have created fake open WiFi networks in Dubai to access people's mobile devices, according to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), warning mobile phone users to be careful when connecting to "free" WiFi networks in public areas. The TRA said that hackers create fake WiFi using hotels' names so that they can get access to the user's smartphone and steal data. The fake WiFi network connection will often have a name similar to the original, but with an extra letter or digit. In other instances, hackers can use fake WiFi to destroy devices, blackmail users or steal emails, bank accounts or photos. Users must make sure the WiFi connection has a username and password, the TRA said. "If the user have one per cent suspicion in the open WiFi in the city, then it's better not to log into it.
