Court to find out if medical negligence as a result of the spat caused death of infant

  RAJASTHAN – The high court in Rajasthan has taken cognizance of an incident at the state-run Umaid hospital involving two senior doctors who got into a verbal argument during a caesarean procedure on a woman. The court will find out if medical negligence as a result of the spat led to the death of an infant girl. A video showing the two arguing physicians during the operation has gone viral. According to a Hindustan Times report, the secretary of the Rajasthan Legal Services Authority told the court that a woman identified as Naseem Bano was in the operating theatre when the video was taken by a nursing staff who was in the operating room. Bano delivered a girl. Another woman named Anita was also in the operating room to undergo caesarean procedure but her newborn girl died after birth. The Rajasthan legal service official said the investigation will determine if the argument that ensued between the two doctors contributed to the baby's demise. The two doctors were reportedly arguing over the infant's falling pulse rate. In the mobile phone clip, gynaecologist Ashok Nainwal and anaesthetist Mathura Lal Tak were seen shouting at each other. Nainwal was heard telling Tak: "You stay within your limits." After the argument, one of the doctors walked out of the operating room. The two doctors could not be contacted for their side on the incident. Umaid hospital superintendent Ranjana Desai told The Hindustan Times that Anita was brought into the hospital on Tuesday in critical condition and was immediately wheeled into the operating theatre but her baby could not be saved. "We are yet to ascertain if the newborn's death was because of the spat. The cause of death is severe birth asphyxia," Desai said. She also said they have taken statements from all those who were in the operating room during the argument and are preparing a report to be submitted to the principal. Meanwhile, Amilal Bhat, principal of SN Medical College that runs Umaid hospital, said Nainwal was suspended while Tak's service file was sent to the personnel department in Jaipur upon orders of the government.
