An approximately 1-metre (3-foot) asteroid entered the Earth's atmosphere over the Philippines and landed near Luzon on Thursday morning. The European Space Agency (ESA) estimated the impact occurred at 12:39am PHT (8:39pm GST). Astronomers from the Catalina Sky Survey first discovered the object which they originally called CAQTDL2, but it has now been named 2024 RW1. According to ESA's post on X, the object was harmless as it was small enough to burn up in the atmosphere when it entered. The asteroid would “create a fireball off the east coast of the northern Philippines”, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
