Ostapenko hit over gesture; snub mars end of match between US, Polish players

  NEW YORK – French Open women's singles champ and Latvian 12th seed Jelena Ostapenko was criticized for the awkward handshake she had with her victorious Russian opponent Daria Kasaktina after their match on Sunday. Ostapenko was ousted by Kasaktina from the US Open in their third-round match, 6-3, 6-2. In explaining her dismal performance, Ostapenko said she wasn't feeling well during the match. World no. 39 Kasaktina, for her part, admitted being nervous at the start of the match but she overcame it and focused on the game. At the end of their match, Kasaktina reached out to Ostapenko to shake hands but the Latvian didn't just extended her hand and pulled away, much to the Russian's chagrin. Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic sarcastically described what happened as "classy". Steve Darcis , tennis writers and even Andy Murray's mother also criticized Ostapenko for the awkward gesture. Mrs. Murray tweeted: "Jelena Ostapenko has perfected the "no look" handshake." Asked during a post-match press conference if she and Kasaktina were friends, Ostapenko replied: "I actually don't know her. We just play the same tournaments from the age of 10 or 12. I saw her many times, but I don't know her." Meanwhile, a snub marred the end of the match between No. 20 seeded player CoCo Vandeweghe of the US defeated No. 10 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. Vandeweghe beat Radwanska 7-5 4-6 6-4. A replay of a hit by Vandeweghe confirmed the latter's win and as Radwanska went to the net to congratulate the American, Vandeweghe turned around and instead celebrated in front of the crowd. She turned around after and shook hands with Radwanska.
