Rain continues to pound RAK, Sharjah, Fujairah, parts of UAE

DUBAI – The weather bureau on Saturday issued a flash flood alert as heavy rain continued to pound parts of the country, forcing the UAE Ministry of Education to announce that schools will be closed on Sunday (April 14). The ministry made the announcement on Saturday evening, when heavy downpour hit the UAE. In Dubai, however, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority clarified that schools can decide whether or not to suspend classes on Sunday. In Ras Al Khaimah on Saturday, heavy evening rain caused massive flooding that slowed down traffic in the city centre, particularly on Al Nakheel Road. Residents of Al Digdaga area also reported hail earlier in the day. Emergency teams in Ras Al Khaimah warned of big waves and the risk of flash floods in some valleys, urging residents to stay away from these areas. Also on Saturday, rain of various intensities fell on Dubai, Al Ain, Sharjah and Fujairah. The highest rainfall amount recorded until 4pm on Saturday was 87.1mm. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) said the unstable weather is due to low atmospheric pressure causing a buildup of clouds and bringing intermittent rainfall. The weather bureau said rain is forecast to continue until Sunday.
