Watch: Sharjah Police issues advisory to beachgoers
DUBAI – Headed to the beach? The Sharjah Police has shared a video advisory to alert beachgoers on the dangers that can happen but can be avoided.
On Twitter, the police posted a video showing parents why they need to be alert when taking children out to the beach.
The video showed how a moment of distraction almost led to an unfortunate incident at the beach.
Before you head to the water, read the safety signs first so you are aware of any dangers or warnings on the beach.
2. Swim within sight of the lifeguard
Always swim in places patrolled by lifeguards and stick to areas between red and yellow flags because they’re the safest part of the beach.
3. Know what the flags mean
Green: Low hazard (exercise caution)
Yellow: Medium hazard (moderate surf and/or currents)
Single Red: High hazard (high surf and/or strong currents)
Double Red: Beach closed to the public
Purple: Dangerous marine life (but not sharks), flown with either red or yellow flag
4. Enter the water with your feet first
People get serious injuries by diving headfirst into the ocean water. Enter the water with your feet first before waddling into a depth you are comfortable with.
5. Use the buddy system
Always swim with a friend or a family member so you can keep an eye out for each other.
6. Hydrate
Avoid the risk of heat stroke by drinking enough water while out on the beach. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
7. Avoid sunburn
Severe sunburn can cause nausea and skin blisters. Protect yourself by applying sunscreen on your skin at least 15 minutes before going into the sun. Reapply sunscreen regularly, particularly after swimming.
