DUBAI – More than 1,000 public teachers in the UAE have resigned in the past three years, according to Federal National Council (FNC) member Ayesha bin Samnoh.
What is driving these teachers to resign? Bin Samnoh said in an FNC meeting on Wednesday that public school teachers are feeling unhappy, demotivated and overworked.
Part of it is frustration over a lack of career development, Bin Samnoh told the assembly that also includes Minister of State for Public Education Jameela Al Muhairi.
“A teacher today has no road map and feels insecure. They have no goals,” Bin Samnoh said, adding that teachers are coping with “big burdens” without any help.
Bin Samnoh echoed sentiments from educators about their grueling 8-hour solo work that stretch to weekends where teachers devote their time to help students for free.
“Teachers are always asking when the new retirement law will come out, so all they care about now is when they can retire,” she added.
The FNC member said that public school teachers have also expressed interest in having a bigger say in how the curriculum is shaped.
The Minister of State for Public Education, for her part, said the ministry gave 3,000 teachers promotions worth Dh35 million last year.
Minister Al Muhairi said that a teacher career path plan is also being developed and will be announced soon.
