The WhatsApp Pink scam has resurfaced, with users receiving messages on WhatsApp about a so-called new version with a pink theme that is available for download. The malicious app, which was first reported in 2021, is actually the work of scammers who want to trick users into giving access to their personal data. Messages on WhatsApp direct users to download the app from a website. Once downloaded, the app lets scammers steal personal data, including banking details, one-time passwords (OTPs), photos and contacts. It can potentially infect other devices, too. Industry experts have repeatedly warned users to only download and install apps from trusted sources like Google Play Store.

How to remove WhatsApp Pink?

In case users have clicked on the link, they are advised to uninstall the app as soon as possible. Users must first make sure the app is not linked with any other device. This can be checked under the “Linked devices” section in WhatsApp. Once installed, the malicious app may attempt to hide from the list of installed apps. Users must take care to manually remove suspicious devices when uninstalling the app. They must also check all their download folders to make sure there is no additional file from the download still available on their device.
