Journalists from major media organizations prohibited from attending off-camera briefing

  WASHINGTON – In an unprecedented move, the White House has prohibited major new organizations from attending a recent off-camera press briefing. CNN, BBC, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Politico and Buzzfeed were among the news outlets barred from attending a briefing at the office of Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Friday. The off-camera press briefing, or gaggle as it is called, was conducted in lieu of the media conference at the White House briefing room. When reporters from the news organizations tried to enter Spicer's office for the gaggle, they were barred because they were not on the list of attendees. But representatives of Breitbart News, The Washington Times and One America News Network, considered as conservative media organizations, were allowed into Spicer's office. A CNN report said White House journalists had deemed the ban as unprecedented and the ban has added tension between the press and the Trump administration. To recall, Trump had described major American news outlets as "fake media" as he blamed the press for problems faced by his barely month-old administration. The move of the Trump administration to bar news outlets from attending the press briefing at Spicer's office expectedly elicited criticism from the affected media organizations. "This is an unacceptable development by the Trump White House. Apparently this is how they retaliate when you report facts they don't like. We'll keep reporting regardless," CNN said. On the other hand, New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet said: "Nothing like this has ever happened at the White House in our long history of covering multiple administrations of different parties. We strongly protest the exclusion of The New York Times and the other news organizations. Free media access to a transparent government is obviously of crucial national interest."
