Why you should get a 3rd dose of COVID-19 vaccine

Covid-19 has been around for quite some while and new variants come out from all over the world as time progresses. To say that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has left thousands of people in critical condition would be an understatement. Even those who were vaccinated are still susceptible to the virus. With the Omicron variant surging since last year, getting the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine has become more critical than ever. Several data suggest that even though current vaccines have proved its effectivity against COVID-19, the protection they offer may fade after a while. To further assess why you should consider getting the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, it's important to understand the studies that back up its necessity.

What do scientists say?

In a study published in the British Medical Journal, they found out that while the Omicron variant causes less severe disease than previous strains, it is more resistant to mRNA vaccines, hence, even those who contract the variant are still at risk of serious illness or even death. Studies beginning March of 2021 to January 2022 from US hospitals that have been peer-reviewed shows the effectiveness of vaccines in the prevention of severe cases of Covid-19. To help prevent hospital admissions, researchers compared the effectiveness of two and three doses of mRNA vaccines Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna with the Alpha, Delta, and Omicron variants among adults admitted to the hospital. Results suggest that two doses of an mRNA vaccine show a lower percentage of protection against the Omicron variant (65 percent) while Alpha and Delta Variants scored (85 percent) effectivity against the virus. The researchers then compared it with two doses and found out that it has 86 percent effectiveness against the Oicron variant, closely similar to two doses against the Alpha and Delta variants. Vaccinated patients in the research have shown significantly lower disease severity than unvaccinated patients for all the variants. Meanwhile, the unvaccinated adults admitted to the hospital with Covid-19, shows severe cases with the Delta variant, followed by the Alpha variant and Omicron variant. The Omicron variant, however, was associated with substantial critical illness and death with 15 percent vaccinated and unvaccinated of patients admitted, progressing to 7 percent of deaths and invasive mechanical ventilation.
