  MANILA - The Philippines will still host the Miss Universe pageant in 2017. The Department of Tourism (DOT) in an official statement released on Tuesday (October 11) said it is still keen on holding the pageant even if there are petitions sent to the Miss Universe organization to reconsider its offer. The petitioners told the Miss Universe organizing committee that holding the pageant here would serve as a "reward" to what they believe was the "objectionable, scandalous, and demeaning sexist attitude demonstrated by the newly elected leaders of our country, by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte, and his cohorts towards womankind." The DOT insisted that the support to hold the pageant here is "overwhelming, especially among women and their families." "DOT gives due respect to such opinion as signified by a group of women leaders and concerned citizens, we assure everyone that we deem it a great honor to host the distinguished event that portray the most beautiful and talented women with the highest regard," it said. It emphasized that it is a "golden opportunity" for the country to boost tourism and local economy in hosting the pageant since international media and guests are expected to fly to the country for the two-week event.
