Will Smith apologises for slapping Chris Rock, Oscars hints action against star

  Hollywood actor Will Smith issued a statement apologizing to Chris Rock on Monday (March 29 in UAE) for slapping comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars. Smith’s statement came after the film academy said it might take action against the star for the incident on Sunday night. In a post on Instagram, Smith said his behaviour was "unacceptable and inexcusable." "I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris," Smith wrote. "I was out of line and I was wrong." Initially, Smith was laughing but later walked on stage and slapped Rock after the comedian made a “GI Jane” joke at Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, referring to her baldness. Jada—who is suffering from a medical condition called alopecia or hair loss—was caught on camera looking clearly affected by the joke. Smith then took to the stage to slap Rock. Smith returned to his seat and shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth!” He would later win Best Actor for the film King Richard, where he plays the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. "Jokes at my expense are part of the job," Smith said on Monday, "but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally." Rock has declined to file a police report against Smith. On Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said it was reviewing Smith’s action at the awards. "We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law," the academy added. The Oscars has a policy against “any form of abuse, harassment or discrimination".
