French magazine denies breaching private of British royal couple

  LONDON - Prince William and wife Catherine have sued a French magazine for publishing topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge in 2012 and the royal couple is seeking US$1.6 million (1.5 million Euros or 1.3 million in British pounds sterling) in damages. Paul-Albert Iweins, lawyer of Closer magazine, told the UK Press Association that six people working for Closer magazine and its regional counterpart La Provence went on trial last Tuesday. The photos showed the Duchess sunbathing topless while on a holiday in the royal couple's private villa in southern France in September 2012. When the photos came out in Closer magazine and La Provence, it outraged St. James Palace. According to a UK Press Association report, Ernesto Mauri, chief executive of the publishing group that produces Closer, was charged with using a document obtained by a breach of privacy, along with Marc Auburtin, who was La Provence's publishing director at the time. The same report also said Closer magazine editor Laurence Pieau is charged with complicity while photographers Cyril Moreau and Dominique Jacovides and Valerie Suau, who were photographers for La Provence, were charged with invasion of privacy and complicity. A French court fined Closer in 2012 for publishing the photos and banned it from distributing the pictures in print or online. Jacovides and Suau however denied taking photographs that were allegedly sold to Closer,. Suau, who is accused of taking photographs that ran in La Provence, told the court she did not intend to breach the royals' privacy. Jean Veil, lawyer of Prince William and the Duchess, read a statement of the royal couple last Tuesday that said: "In September 2012, my wife and I thought that we could go to France for a few days in a secluded villa owned by a member of my family, and thus enjoy our privacy. The clandestine way in which these photographs were taken was particularly shocking to us as it breached our privacy." Iweins, speaking on behalf of Closer magazine, argued that the photos cast the royal couple "in a positive light" and was not a breach of privacy, the Press Association said. Meanwhile, Judge Florence Lasserre-Jeannin will hand down a ruling on the case on July 4.
