Tournament organizers however say the grass had passed 'hardness readings'

  LONDON - Tennis greats have complained about the quality of the grass on the All-England Club's courts. Wimbledon defending champion Andy Murray and seven-time champion Roger Federer said players have been slipping on the grass because of its poor quality. Murray claimed he even saw divots (loose pieces of turf) on a court he played on. Among the players who have slipped on the court in their match last week were Kristina Mladenovic of France and American player Alison Riske. Novak Djokovic, for his part, said the ball would bounce in a different manner on some patches. Murray and Federer urged that work be done on the courts yesterday (Sunday) when there are no games scheduled, in time for the resumption of matches today (Monday). A common complaint among the players and by the spectators is that the grass on the court isn't as lush it used to be at the start of the tournament in past years. The 2017 Wimbledon Championships started last July 3 and will end on July 15. But Wimbledon organizers said the grass have passed "hardness readings" and the court are playable. The slippery surface however was blamed on the unusually hot weather in the buildup to the Grand Slam tournament and throughout the first week. Neil Stubley, the head of courts and horticulture at Wimbledon, said, "We looked at the baselines and the areas that they thought there was an issue. We didn't feel there was. The Grand Slam supervisor and assistant referee didn't believe that there was either. When you look at the comparisons of other courts ... they were in or around the same condition as the other courts." Although the courts are under stress after a week of competition, Stubley is confident that they will hold up throughout the tournament's second week.
