An Arab woman has been arrested in Sharjah after she threatened to blackmail an Emirati man with a false rape claim. Sharjah Police began an investigation into the case after being alerted to a social media post featuring an audio recording of the conversation between the Emirati and the woman. In the audio recording, which the Emirati himself posted on social media, he is heard agreeing to give the woman a ride to a nearby location after she told him she could not afford a taxi ride. The Emirati, who recounted the incident in his social media video, alleged that after the woman got in his car, she tore her clothing and told him she would accuse him of rape if he didn’t give her money. He said he was forced to give her Dh850. He also said he didn’t want to file a police report about the incident for fear or damaging his reputation. According to Sharjah Police, a team of investigators was set up to identify the man and the woman referred to in the recording. Sharjah Police Commander-in-Chief Major General Saif Al Shamsi said police tracked down the woman, who admitted to scamming the Emirati. The case has been referred to the public prosecutors for legal action. Meanwhile, Sharjah Police urged the public to refrain from posting such incidents on social media that “has a negative outcome in relation to the security of the community”. Police warned that violators will be “held legally responsible”.
