Suspects allegedly forged woman's signature on money transfer and bank forms to get her money

  DUBAI – An Emirati woman has accused her businessman-husband and an accounts manager of a local bank of stealing five million pounds sterling or Dh23.5 million from her account by forging her signature on money transfer and other bank documents. The woman's husband did not show up at the Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday to submit a plea while the banker pleaded not guilty to charges of theft, forgery of official documents and use of forged official documents. A third suspect remains at large. Court records showed that the woman went to a local bank's branch in a mall in Al Rashidiya on August 2009 to open an account for her and her children. She deposited five million pounds sterling or Dh23.55 million in the account. She called up the bank after failing to get any email notification about the status of the bank account. After awhile, the 37-year-old Emirati banker notified the woman that her account is already open. When her first interest from her bank account was due, the woman called the bank again because she did not get any notification but the banker told her to continue deposting money in the bank. After sometime, the banker and another bank employee allegedly called her up and asked her to come and sign some documents but she did not go. The woman eventually contacted the banker and asked him to transfer her money to another bank because she was not earning any interest from it. When the transfer of her money was delayed, she complained to the bank's legal department. The woman complained to the police after the issue remained unresolved. Police investigation revealed that the woman's account had no money because the banker and her businessman-husband allegedly forged her signature on documents and took her money. Prosecutors accused the banker of stealing the woman's money by forging her signature on money transfer documents while the woman's husband was charged with forgery and use of forged documents as well as aiding and abetting the banker.
