Woman repatriated from UAE after 9 months in coma, Dh2 million hospital bill

DUBAI - A 27-year-old Ethiopian housemaid who fell into a coma 48 hours after arriving in the UAE was flown back home after 9 months in the hospital. Najat Mohammad Nurye left behind an unpaid bill of Dh2 million, which was waived by International Modern Hospital where she was rushed for emergency on July 23.   Dr. Kishen Pakkal, CEO of the International Modern Hospital, said Nurye was gasping for breath and foaming in the mouth when she was rushed to the hospital's emergency room. She was suspected to have attempted suicide after the Dubai Police and paramedics found an empty box of Vaseline beside when they responded to an emergency call at her residence. Nurye had arrived in Dubai on July 21 to work as a housemaid. Her visa could not be stamped and insurance could not be issued to her as she fell into a coma two days after her arrival in the country. On Thursday, Nurye was flown to Addis Ababa to be reunited with her family. Dr. Pakkal said that Nurye's condition has slightly improved as she was able to open her eyes and cry. "We feel being united with her loved ones was the best humanitarian gesture we could have extended to her,” Dr. Pakkal said.
