Woman stranded in UK returns to UAE after son asks RAK ruler for help

DUBAI – A woman stranded in the UK was able to return to the UAE on Wednesday (May 13) after the Ras Al Khaimah ruler granted her son’s wish. Jessica Fitzjohn had travelled to the UK more than 50 days ago to attend her father’s funeral. Travel restrictions due to Covid-19 left her unable to return to the UAE. Her 7-year-old son, Archie, had written to Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, to ask for his help. In his handwritten letter, the boy recalled meeting Sheikh Saud with his classmates from RAK Academy last year. Sheikh Saud responded with a handwritten letter of his own, saying he enjoyed reading the boy’s letter. “I remember meeting you and having a great day with you and your classmates,” Sheikh Saud wrote. "I understand you miss your mommy very much and I am very proud of you for being a brave boy," he wrote. "I hope bringing her home will make you smile." With the cooperation of government entities, Archie’s mother, Jessica, was flown into the UAE and arrived in the country on Wednesday. "I can’t thank the Ruler enough for his kindness in organizing my return," said Jessica, who will need to undergo a 14-day quarantine. The Fitzjohns thanked the UAE government for arranging the reunion. “We are absolutely overwhelmed… we are forever thankful,” said Richard, Jessica’s husband. Their son, Archie, was the happiest. "I am so happy to have my mommy back... I can’t believe that this has happened and thank you so much to Sheikh Saud," he said.
