  TANZANIA - A group of female football players are out to break the world record for the highest competitive football played by having a match on Africa's tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro. The team embarked yesterday on the trip to Tanzania to climb to the summit of the 5,985-meter (19,341 feet) dormant volcano. They will descend to 18,799 feet and play a 90-minute game on an area on June 24 or 25 – weather-permitting. A football game played in that altitude has never been done before. The team is composed of 20 nationalities ranging in ages 18 to 66. Among those who are in the group are retired US football player Lori Lindsey, former England midfielder Rachel Unitt, erstwhile Germany footballer Petra Landers and former Mexico football captain Monica Gonzalez. Lindsey told CNN Sports their aim was to raise awareness of the issues women and girls face when playing sport. Lindsey played for the USA at the 2011 World Cup and 2012 London Games. "I'm fortunate enough to have had pioneers who came before me, but it's our responsibility to continue to make strides forward for the generations to come," Lindsey said. Playing in thin air would be a challenge for the women because it causes a reduction in a player's performance. Through the organization Equal Playing Field and several crowd funding pages, the female footballers sought to raise at least US$9,000 for the mission. Aside from the players, there will be International Football Federation (FIFA) referees, coaches, a medical team, and support crew who will go with them. After they have accomplished their mission, the team will hold football training clinics throughout the year for women and girls in at least 15 countries such as South Africa, Argentina, the UAE, China and Jordan.
