Chinese newspaper calls US president-elect 'an ignorant child' on foreign policy

  BEIJING - The Chinese Government said it is "seriously concerned" after US President-elect Donald Trump questioned whether Washington should still adhere to the long-standing policy wherein Taiwan is considered part of China. This, as a Chinese newspaper described Trump as an "ignorant like a child" on foreign policies. Beijing issued the statement after Trump called Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen early this month during which they talked about economic and bilateral ties between the US and Taiwan and to congratulate her on her election as president. Tsai, for her part, congratulated Trump on his election. Trump's telephone call was the first to be made by an incoming or incumbent US leader to a Taiwanese leader and it displeased Beijing because it violated the long-standing "One China" policy adhered to by Washington. Beijing considers Taiwan a renegade province. Trump however is willing incur Beijing's ire by continuing to deal with Taiwan. "I fully understand the 'one China' policy, but I don't know why we have to be bound by a 'one China' policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade," Trump said. China, on the other hand, said cooperation with the US "is out of the question" unless the incoming US president follows the "One China" policy. The "One-China" policy has been a cornerstone of bilateral ties between Beijing and Washington since it established diplomatic relations in the 1970s. Meanwhile, the Global Times newspaper of China said Trump is "ignorant as a child" when it comes to foreign policy. In an editorial, the newspaper said "The 'One China' policy cannot be bought and sold, Trump, it seems, only understands business and believes that everything has a price and that if he is strong enough he can buy and sell by force." The newspaper warned of a "real crisis" between Beijing and Washington if Trump abandons the "One China" policy.
