Bertha was one of the original animals at the decades-old Manila Zoo

  MANILA – Bertha, the remaining hippopotamus at the Manila Zoo, died last week due to old age. The 65-year-old 2.5-ton animal was the world's oldest hippopotamus in captivity and was among the original animals of the zoo when it opened in 1959. James Albert Dichaves, director of the Manila Parks and Recreation Bureau, told the Philippine Star on Monday that Bertha was found lifeless by zookeepers at 1:45 p.m. Friday last week. Dichaves said they had Bertha's remains autopsied but the veterinarians said they did not find anything resembling sickness or disease that might have caused the animal's demise so they concluded that Bertha died of old age. "We were actually anticipating it already because her health had been deteriorating in the past three weeks," Dichaves said in the Philippine Star interview, adding that zookeepers had noticed that Bertha was moving slower than usual before she passed away. Dichaves said Bertha was buried in one of the vacant lots in the zoo but after her remains decompose, her skeleton will be exhumed and preserved. Dichaves said he was "extremely proud" that Bertha had exceeded the average lifespan of hippopotamuses, which is 40 to 50 years. Bertha outlived a hippopotamus named Donna, who died in 2012 at the age of 62 at the Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden in Evansville, Indiana in the US. Bertha had a partner named Bert, who passed away sometime in the 1980s. Bertha and Bert failed to produce an offspring.
