World's best island Boracay could be 'permanently closed'

  DUBAI - Popular Philippine resort island Boracay, named the world's best island in the 2017 Readers' Choice Awards of Conde Nast Traveller, is in danger of being "permanently closed". Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte made the threat as the island faced serious garbage and wastewater problems. Duterte gave officials six months to address the environmental issues in the world-famous island resort. The Philippine president, in a speech delivered in Cebu City on Monday, threatened to "permanently close" Boracay if its environmental issues are not resolved. "The people running local governments in Boracay, you allowed things to happen, building structures that overlap the coastline," he said. Boracay has become a top destination in Southeast Asia and draws an international crowd due to its natural powdery white sand beach and clear waters. However, unregulated building construction on the island have added to its waste disposal problem. Green algae growth on the shore during the summer months has been a growing cause for concern, with experts blaming the island's sewage system. Duterte said that Boracay officials allowed buildings to be constructed without proper sewerage, therefore creating what he described as a "disaster". The Philippine president wants authorities to address the island’s chronic problem on waste disposal. "I will charge officials with serious neglect of duty" if nothing is done about these concerns, Duterte said. He accused local officials of "making Boracay a cesspool". Duterte tasked Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu to spearhead efforts of improving environmental conditions in Boracay. "This is a challenge again for the department," Cimatu said. Bureaus and agencies connected to DENR, including the Environmental Management Bureau and the Forest Management Bureau, will be brought in to work on Boracay's problems, Cimatu said.
