World's best nurse opens new school after winning $250,000 in Dubai

Kenyan national Anna Qabale Duba has opened a new school building after winning $250,000 in the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award in Dubai. Duba, who won the grand prize in May 2022, has opened the doors to a new school building in her remote village of Turbi. The school will educate more than 200 people. Classes are for pre-primary to Grade 4, with plans to expand until Grade 6. Duba said her school will also have afternoon classes for the children’s parents who are illiterate. They will be taught the basics of reading and writing. Duba said she wanted to empower people in her village to have a good education and reach where they want in life. She is the youngest in a family of 9 and the first from her village to graduate high school and university. She picked nursing as a career. While studying nursing, she won Miss Tourism Kenya 2013, which helped her gain influence for her advocacies of education, gender equality and health. “I have always seen people around me struggle to get medical care especially during delivery,” she said, “So when after high school, it came to choosing a career, I picked nursing.” She hopes to be able to improve healthcare in her village. “My next ambition is to build a hospital in my hometown as there is no hospital for at least 200 kilometers,” Duba said.
