John Tinniswood, recognized as the world’s oldest man by Guinness World Records, died peacefully at the age of 112 on Monday (November 25), his family announced. “His last day was surrounded by music and love,” his family told Guinness World Record in a statement. Tinniswood spent his later years at Hollies Care Home in Southport, where he died. Born on August 26, 1912, Tinniswood lived through monumental historical events, from World War I to the digital age. Reflecting on his longevity earlier this year, he remarked, “I just take it in my stride. Why I’ve lived this long, I have no idea at all.” Tinniswood held the record for the world’s oldest living man since April 2024, following the death of 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez of Venezuela. His advice for staying healthy? Do everything in moderation. “If you drink too much or you eat too much or you walk too much; if you do too much of anything, you’re going to suffer eventually,” he said. During World War II, Tinniswood served in the Army Pay Corps, managing logistics such as locating stranded soldiers. After the war, he worked as an accountant for Shell and BP until his retirement in 1972. His advice to the younger generation is to "do the best". “Always do the best you can, whether you’re learning something or whether you’re teaching someone,” he said, “Give it all you’ve got. Otherwise it’s not worth bothering with.” Tinniswood is survived by his daughter, Susan, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. “John always liked to say thank you, so on his behalf, we thank everyone who cared for him over the years,” his family added.
