L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt's net worth was estimated at US$44B

  PARIS – Liliane Bettencourt, heiress of the renowned French cosmetics company L'Oreal, has passed away, her family announced on Thursday. Bettencourt was 94. Daughter of the company's founder, Eugene Schueller, Bettencourt was considered by both Forbes and the Bloomberg Billionaire Index as the world's richest woman with an estimated net worth of around US$44 billion. She was the 14th richest person in the world. The Bettencourt family currently owns 33 percent of the L'Oreal Group, whose brands include Garnier, Lancome and La Roche-Posay. In a statement, L'Oreal president Jean-Paul Agon said: "We all had a deep admiration for Liliane Bettencourt, who always looked after L'Oreal -- the company and its employees, and was dedicated to its success and development." Liliane Henriette Charlotte Schueller was born in 1922 and grew up surrounded by servants and high society. She married French politician Andre Bettencourt in 1950. The couple's only child, Francoise, was born three years later. After Andre Bettencourt's demise in 2007, Francoise Bettencourt-Meyers, sued celebrity photographer Francois-Marie Banier, accusing him of fraudulently exploiting her mother. Banier denied the accusation. Banier befriended Liliane, who is 25 years his senior, and had been by her side for the most part of two decades. During that time, he was estimated to have received more than US$1 billion worth of cash, valuable artworks and other assets from Liliane. At the height of the so-called "Bettencourt Affair" that captivated France for many years, Bettencourt-Meyers sought legal action to have her Liliane declared incapable of handling her own affairs. Liliane told her daughter to mind her own business. "My life is my life," she said in one French TV station interview. Banier was later found guilty of exploiting Bettencourt and was meted a suspended prison sentence.
