World’s smelliest fruit durian sold at Dubai supermarket

  DUBAI – Who would have thought the world’s smelliest fruit would be available at a neighbourhood supermarket in Dubai? But that’s exactly what the Expat Media team found when we visited specialty Chinese store Wenzhou Supermarket in International City this week. The durian—known in Asia as the King of Fruits—is selling for Dh39.90 per kilo at this neighbourhood supermarket in Building A03 in the China cluster, and it seems that there are plenty of takers. Even though one durian would set you back more than Dh100, it proved to be a fast seller, with the stock at the supermarket dwindling to a few handful when we visited again on Thursday (August 15). The fruit is no stranger to Filipinos and Asian expatriates in the UAE; in fact, the durian is abundant in Davao, Philippines, one of the world’s top producers of the stinky fruit. How stinky is it? Some have described its smell as rotten onions. The late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain said after eating the notorious Asian fruit, “your breath will smell as if you’d been French-kissing your dead grandmother.” Despite its notoriety, fruit connoisseurs pay premium for the King of Fruits. Past its intimidating spikes and strong, rank smell, the durian is considered to be rich in iron, Vitamin C and potassium. The stinky fruit is thought to be extremely beneficial to skin health and muscle strength, with one small durian containing 23 grams of the dietary fiber you need daily. It is also used in traditional Asian medicine to prevent fever and as an aphrodisiac. When not eaten raw, the durian is made into various products, including jam, candy, ice cream, coffee and milk shake.
