The index also ranks the world’s weakest passports based on how many destinations their holders can enter without a visa or with a visa on arrival. Countries at the bottom of the list often face challenges linked to conflict, political instability, economic hardship, or limited diplomatic reach. Afghanistan ranks as the weakest passport globally in 2026, offering access to just 24 destinations. Syria and Iraq follow closely behind, reflecting years of geopolitical turmoil that continue to restrict international mobility for their citizens. Several South Asian and Middle Eastern countries also appear in the bottom rankings, where limited visa-free access affects overseas employment opportunities, tourism, and personal mobility. For millions of people, a weak passport does not reflect personal capability or ambition, but rather the broader political and economic realities of their home countries. Experts say improving passport strength often requires long-term investments in diplomacy, stability, and international cooperation.
